Governing Body
A governing body for an independent Special Educational Needs (SEN) school is a group of governors responsible for the school's strategic direction and oversight.
While similar to boards in mainstream schools, their role is distinguished by the unique needs of the student population and the independent status of the school.

As an independent school serving students with complex needs, the governing body has specific duties that go beyond those of a mainstream school.

-
Expertise in special educational needs: The board includes members with a strong interest in SEN to champion the needs of pupils and liaise with the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO).
-
Compliance and inspection: The board must ensure the school complies with statutory regulations like the Independent School Standards, the Equality Act 2010, and the SEND Code of Practice. They prepare for and work with independent inspectors, such as the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).
-
Safeguarding and welfare: The governing body has a heightened responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. This includes reviewing and ensuring effective safeguarding and child protection policies.
-
Community and parent partnership: Governors ensure effective communication with parents, which is especially critical in an SEN setting.
