About Our School

Safe Start School is an independent school for students aged 11–16 years. We specialise in supporting young people who have faced challenges in mainstream education and benefit from a more flexible, therapeutic, and tailored approach. Our ethos is built on a deep understanding of childhood trauma and adverse experiences, guiding us to create a compassionate and secure space where healing and learning can thrive.

Our supportive, bespoke approach

  • A "primary model": To help students feel safe and supported, every student has a consistent teacher and teaching assistant, in classes of up to five students. This consistency allows us to build secure, respectful, and trusting relationships that are crucial for academic and personal growth.

  • Trauma-informed practice: Our staff are highly trained in the Thrive approach, ensuring our whole-school practice provides the nurture and stability our students need to make successful choices.

  • Tailored curriculum: Our bespoke curriculum includes core subjects like English, Maths, and Science, with the aim of achieving a GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications. We also offer vocational pathways in areas such as sport, music and digital skills, catering to different interests and strengths.

  • Beyond the classroom: We are passionate about enriching our students' education outside the classroom. Our "Enrichment Pathway" includes opportunities such Food Wise and projects related to the UN Rights Respecting Schools programme.

A focus on future success
Our ultimate goal is to see every student leave Safe Start with increased confidence, qualifications, and the life skills to thrive in post-16 education and beyond. We are proud to work collaboratively with students, families, and external agencies to ensure a holistic and supportive network for every child.

At Safe Start, we celebrate diversity and strive to be the best we can be. Join us, and together, let's create a happy and successful future for your child.
